The self-hosted intranet for teams that own their security
Run Axero on your own cloud or on-premise infrastructure. Keep complete control over your data, access policies, and compliance posture — with a dedicated team guiding every step. No shared tenancy. No vendor access to your data. No compromise.
A self-hosted intranet means the software runs inside infrastructure you own and control — not a vendor's multi-tenant cloud. With Axero, you deploy the platform into your own cloud account (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud). You hold the keys, your data stays on your network, and Axero has no standing access to it.
A traditional on-premise intranet takes that one step further: the platform runs on physical servers inside your own data center. It's the right fit for air-gapped networks and organizations whose policies don't allow public-cloud workloads at all.
Both are "self-hosted" in the sense that matters most to a security team — the data and the infrastructure are yours. Axero supports either model. Prefer a fully managed option? We host single-tenant in our cloud too. The choice is about where your compliance requirements draw the line, and you don't have to decide alone.

The build-in-house trap
Why building your own intranet rarely pays off
Teams in regulated industries often default to building an intranet in-house — it feels like the only way to keep data fully under control. Then the real cost shows up. Here's what an in-house build signs you up for.
The build never actually ends
Standing up the first version is the easy part. Then come the feature requests, the browser updates, the framework upgrades, and the bug reports. An intranet is a product, not a project — and someone on your team owns that product forever, instead of the work you hired them for.
Security is a moving target
Owning the data means owning the threat model. Patching, dependency CVEs, penetration testing, monitoring, incident response — it's continuous work, and a missed update is the kind of gap auditors and attackers both look for. A vendor-supported platform absorbs that maintenance for you, on infrastructure you still control.
Compliance audits don't wait for your backlog
When an auditor asks for access logs, data-residency proof, or a retention policy, the answer has to exist on day one — not after a sprint. Purpose-built platforms ship audit trails, role-based access, and encryption as standard. In-house, every one of those is a feature you have to build and then defend.
Your intranet competes with your real roadmap
Every hour spent maintaining an internal tool is an hour not spent on the systems that move your business. Most engineering teams can't sustain an intranet at the quality employees expect — so it stalls, adoption drops, and you're back to scattered email and shared drives.
Control without the maintenance burden
What your IT team gets with Axero's Self-Hosted Intranet
You own the infrastructure and the data. We own the platform, the roadmap, and the heavy lifting — so your team isn't on the hook for building and maintaining an intranet from scratch.
Your infrastructure. Your data. No vendor access.
Axero runs inside the cloud account or data center you already control. Your data lives on your network, behind your perimeter, under your keys. Axero has no standing access to it — so the answer to “can the vendor see our data?” is simply no. For organizations bound by data-residency rules, you choose the exact region and account your intranet runs in.
Security on your terms
Plug Axero into the controls you already run — firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, SIEM, and zero-trust access. Authentication flows through your identity provider (Active Directory, Azure AD, Okta, SAML) with role-based access control and two-factor authentication. Encryption, audit logs, and key management stay inside your environment, so your security team keeps total visibility and consistent enforcement.
Compliance you can prove
Data residency, retention, and access are yours to define — and yours to demonstrate. Generate tamper-evident audit logs, enforce retention and access policies, and produce the reports an auditor asks for without a fire drill. Axero is built to support SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and GDPR-aligned programs, so a self-hosted deployment slots into the compliance posture you already maintain.
On brand, on every device
Control isn't only about servers. Drag-and-drop layouts, full HTML/CSS/JavaScript access, and a branded homepage make the intranet look like your organization — not a generic template. Employees get the same experience on the web and on native iOS and Android apps, with an optional white-label mobile app so even the icon on their phone is yours.
Stay current with every general release
Self-hosting shouldn't mean falling behind. On-premise and self-hosted customers get the same platform upgrades we ship to the cloud — new features, fixes, and security patches — delivered through Axero's general releases. Your IT team decides when each release lands, so upgrades fit your change-management process and maintenance windows instead of being forced on someone else's schedule. Follow the documented on-premises upgrade path, test in your staging environment, and promote to production on your timeline.
Why organizations choose self-hosted
Control over your data, without rebuilding the wheel
Keep your data sovereign
Everything stays inside infrastructure you own — the right region, the right account, the right data center. No third party holds a copy.
Enforce your own security controls
Your firewalls, your encryption, your identity provider, your zero-trust policies. Axero fits the perimeter you've already built.
Stay audit-ready
Tamper-evident logs, retention policies, and granular access controls give you the evidence regulators ask for, on demand.
Skip the in-house build
Get a mature, full-featured intranet without committing an engineering team to building and maintaining one forever.
Unify comms, knowledge, and collaboration
News, documents, wikis, the people directory, and your everyday tools live in one place employees actually use.
Scale without re-platforming
Add locations, business units, and employee groups as you grow — with role-based access that stays manageable at any size.
Built for your industry
Made for the most regulated industries
If you're accountable for security and compliance, you already know one size doesn't fit all. Axero deploys into the environments and control frameworks your sector demands.

Guided implementation
You don't deploy it alone
A self-hosted intranet is only as good as its rollout. Every Axero customer gets a dedicated team that runs the deployment with you — from architecture review to launch and beyond.
01
Discovery & architecture
We review your security requirements, infrastructure, and integrations, then design a deployment that fits your environment and compliance rules.
02
Environment setup
Stand Axero up in your AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud account — or your own data center — alongside your IT and security teams.
03
Configuration & branding
Connect your identity provider, set role-based permissions, and shape the intranet to your structure, brand, and workflows.
04
Migration & integration
Bring over content and wire up Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, your HRIS, and the tools your teams already use.
05
Launch & ongoing success
Go live with training and a launch plan — then keep a named Client Success Manager who knows your deployment, not a generic queue.
Dedicated support
A dedicated team, not a support queue
Self-hosting shouldn't mean self-service support. When you run Axero on your own infrastructure, you still get a named Client Success Manager who knows your specific deployment — not a rotating cast of first-line agents reading from a script.
You get white-glove onboarding, around-the-clock support, and an SLA that holds us accountable. As we ship platform updates, we coordinate them with your IT and security teams on a schedule that works for you — and managed services are available if you'd rather we run more of it.

Frequently asked questions about self-hosted and on-premise intranets
What is the difference between an on-premise and a self-hosted intranet?
A self-hosted intranet runs on infrastructure you own and control, and the vendor has no standing access to your data. The term covers two setups: hosting in your own cloud account (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and a traditional on-premise intranet running on physical servers in your own data center. Both keep data and infrastructure under your control — an on-premise deployment simply lives in your data center rather than your cloud. Axero supports both, plus a fully managed single-tenant cloud option if you prefer.
Why choose a self-hosted or on-premise intranet over SaaS?
Organizations in regulated industries — government, financial services, healthcare, defense, and life sciences — often need to keep data inside their own perimeter to meet data-residency, security, and compliance obligations. A self-hosted or on-premise intranet gives them that control: data never leaves their environment, the vendor can't access it, and security policies are enforced with the controls they already run. For teams without those constraints, our managed cloud is often the simpler choice.
Does Axero have access to our data when we self-host?
No. When you self-host, Axero runs inside infrastructure you own and control. Your data stays on your network under your keys, and Axero has no standing access to it. We support your deployment without holding a copy of your data.
What are the server and infrastructure requirements?
Requirements scale with your user count and how you configure the platform. At a minimum, plan for dedicated application and database resources, sufficient storage, a backup solution, and a disaster-recovery plan. During discovery, our implementation team sizes the environment with you and provides a reference architecture for your cloud account or data center.
Does the self-hosted intranet support single sign-on (SSO)?
Yes. Axero integrates with Active Directory, Azure AD (Microsoft Entra ID), Okta, OneLogin, and other SAML 2.0 providers for authentication, role-based access control, and SSO. Two-factor authentication is supported via Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, and Duo.
How is our data secured in a self-hosted deployment?
Your data stays on your servers, behind your perimeter. You apply your own encryption, firewalls, and access policies, and authentication runs through your identity provider. Axero is built to support SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and GDPR-aligned programs, with audit logging and granular permissions as standard.
Can we customize the intranet's features and look?
Yes. The Axero self-hosted intranet is fully customizable — drag-and-drop layouts, custom HTML/CSS/JavaScript, branded homepages, and an optional white-label mobile app for iOS and Android. Match your brand and shape the platform to how your organization actually works.
Is the intranet mobile and app-compatible?
Yes. Axero offers native mobile apps for iOS and Android, with a streamlined interface for accessing your intranet on the go. A white-label version is available so the app carries your brand.
What is the typical deployment timeline?
Most deployments go live in a few weeks to a few months, depending on integrations, content migration, and customization scope. Your dedicated implementation team runs the rollout with you from architecture through launch, so the timeline is planned, not guessed.
Can non-technical teams manage content without IT?
Yes. Content owners and department admins publish pages and updates through a user-friendly WYSIWYG editor — no code, no IT ticket. IT owns the architecture; everyone else manages their own spaces.
Who handles system updates and patches when we self-host?
Updates are coordinated with your internal IT and security teams. As we release platform updates, we work with you to make them available on a schedule that fits your change-management process. Managed services are available if you'd prefer we handle more of the operational load.
Can we move between self-hosted, on-premise, and cloud later?
Yes. If your requirements change — say you start on-premise and later move to your own cloud, or shift to our managed cloud — we help you make that transition. You're not locked into the model you start with.
